⏱️ Estimated reading time: 7 minutes   |   📅 It is commemorated every July 18

Every July 18, the international community stops to honor the memory of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the lawyer, political prisoner and first democratically elected president of South Africa, whose life became synonymous worldwide with reconciliation, dignity and the fight against injustice. The date, declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009, coincides with the anniversary of Mandela's birth in 1918 and calls on millions of people in different countries to translate his legacy into concrete actions of community service.

💬

"It's easy to break and destroy. Heroes are the ones who make peace and build."

— Nelson Mandela

📜 Origin of the commemoration

Nelson Mandela International Day was instituted by resolution A/RES/64/13, adopted by the UN General Assembly in November 2009, in recognition of the former South African president's contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. Since 2010, every July 18 – Mandela's date of birth – the world commemorates this day as a call to individual and collective action.

In December 2015, the General Assembly expanded the scope of the event through resolution A/RES/70/175, incorporating the promotion of dignified prison conditions and the recognition of the work of prison staff, in line with the 27 years that Mandela spent deprived of his liberty.

🌍 Who was Nelson Mandela

Born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo, South Africa, Nelson Mandela trained as a lawyer and became a central figure in the African National Congress (ANC) in its fight against the apartheid regime. Imprisoned in 1962, he was detained for 27 years, much of it in Robben Island prison, where he became an international symbol of peaceful resistance.

Released in 1990, he led a negotiation process that culminated in South Africa's first multiracial elections in 1994, after which he became the country's first black president. His tenure, from 1994 to 1999, was marked by policies of national reconciliation that sought to heal the wounds of decades of racial segregation. In 1993 he had received the Nobel Peace Prize, shared with Frederik de Klerk.

The 67 minutes: the central symbol of the day

The most recognized initiative associated with this date is the invitation to dedicate 67 minutes of personal time to community service, in symbolic representation of the 67 years that Mandela dedicated to the struggle for human rights, democracy and reconciliation, from his entry into activism in 1944 until the end of his public life.

🎯 Theme and theme for 2026

The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the UN support for this edition the slogan "It is still in our hands to fight poverty and inequality", which takes up one of Mandela's most quoted phrases about collective responsibility in the face of social exclusion. The message is framed in an international context marked by political polarization, forced displacement and the effects of climate change on the most vulnerable communities.

Multilateral organizations, embassies, universities and civil society organizations in different countries use the date to organize volunteer activities, educational panels and awareness campaigns under labels such as #MandelaDay and #ActionAgainstPoverty. In 2026, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is also promoting the first Nelson Mandela Global Leadership Forum in New York, as a space for dialogue on social justice and sustainable development.

Although it is not a holiday in most countries, the day maintains a strong educational component: schools and universities take advantage of it to address the history of apartheid, human rights and the value of reconciliation as a political tool.
